Container Statuses and Their Definitions

Terminal49 shows each container’s latest status so you can see what is happening with your cargo as it moves through its journey. The status is located next to the container number in the dashboard.

Understanding the container status and its definition:

  1. No Status - the container has not yet been loaded onto a ship at the port of lading.

  2. On Ship - the container has been loaded onto a ship and is heading to the port of discharge. The container's vessel loaded or vessel departed milestone triggers this status.

  3. At Terminal - for containers with no inland destination, this means the container has been discharged at the port of discharge terminal (triggered by the vessel discharged milestone). For containers with an inland destination, it means the container has been unloaded from the rail car at the inland terminal (triggered by the rail unloaded milestone).

  4. Available - the container is available for pickup and delivery to the consignee. This means the container has no clearance issues preventing its departure from the facility. The container's available milestone triggers this status.

  5. Not Available - the container has not been cleared to leave the terminal. There are many reasons a container may be prevented from leaving, including a variety of terminal, customs, and/or line holds. While a hold is in place, the terminal will not release the container for pickup until it is cleared, and the shipper or forwarder is generally responsible for resolving the issue. During this time, the countdown to the Last Free Day (LFD) continues, which can result in demurrage fees. The container's not available milestone from the terminal triggers this status.

  6. Available at Shippers - the terminal reported that the container has moved off the main terminal to an off-dock or shipper's-own yard, where it is available for pickup. This is set from terminal data (not the steamship line) and is uncommon. It can also appear briefly while the container is transitioning to the off-dock location, before Terminal49 identifies that facility and begins pulling status from it.

  7. Awaiting Inland Transfer - the container has been discharged at the port of discharge but still has an inland destination: it is waiting to be loaded onto rail for the inland leg. The vessel discharged milestone (when an inland destination exists) triggers this status.

  8. On Rail - the container is on rail heading toward its inland destination. The container's rail departed or rail loaded milestone triggers this status.

  9. Picked Up - the container has been picked up by a trucker from the port of discharge or the inland destination and is on its way to the warehouse. The container's full out milestone triggers this status.

  10. Delivered - the container has been delivered to the warehouse. Note that users must mark a container as delivered, since the delivery date and time are only available to them (Terminal49 does not have access to this information). The container's delivered milestone triggers this status.

  11. Empty Returned - the container has been returned to the shipper empty and has completed its journey. Terminal49 will stop tracking the container at this point. See more information here. The container's empty returned or empty in milestone triggers this status.
